What do you think about food? Is it a hobby, a passion, or just a necessity? Are you active in any discourse community that deals with food, food preparation, food aid, food policy, etc.?
Just for kicks, after you riff a while about your relationship to food, try to think of one or two expressions, cliches, or turns-of-phrase in our language that involve food. Read the respondents that came before you--no repeats!!
Being a pastry chef/cake decorater keeps me involved with food. I'm constantly getting people who want something other than yellow cake with chocolate icing. I have to be inventive and resourceful, something I didn't think was going to come along with this job. However the more creative my ideas are the more people are willing to shell out.Food to me is most importantly a source of income. I have always had food at the center of all my jobs. I worked at an ice cream walk up, a catering service, and a bar. All of these places center around food or at least have a major part in the job. So for me food is awesome. Its how I pay my bills.
ReplyDeleteFood is just such an open subject area I really think its one of the easist things to capitalize on. How many people have made livings off inventing hot pockets or toaster strudel. Sure they aren't the most inventive or healthy ideas, but people love em. All the ingredients are already laid out people just have to find the right combination to make their millions.
I definetly think food is an essential for life, not just for nutritional benefits but also for economic stimulus and opprotunity. Food connects people, it employs people, it kills people. The people who market food are genius. How many commercials have convinced you to go out and Do The Dew? or buy a 5 dollar foot long. The money making opprotunites food presents are never ending.
1. Cheese and Rice (Jesus Christ)
2. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer (not food but its still in the field)
And in closing heres how sex sells subs (interesting food add "sexy male voice sells foot long subs and its not by singing the 5 dollar foot long song:

I am a health nut, which is strongly portrayed in the food choices I make and what I like to cook. Fittingly, I am a dietetics major and love every minute of it. I have completed two food science courses along with these almost all of my nutrition classes, of course, revolve around food and influences of food choices. We are constantly analyzing why and how food choices are made in the world and studying graphs containing patterns of food choices. In my food science classes I got down to the nitty gritty of food composition, chemical reactions involved in food preparation, healthy alternatives to our favorite comfort foods, and why certain food alternatives work with a food's composition and why others do not. I have kept many food journals for assignments and then analyzed them all down to a science through a nutricalc program used in dietetics and now have a deeper understanding of what all my food choices do to my body. I have to say being a nutrition freak I do not travel outside of the box food wise as much as I would like but I am always willing to try something new!
ReplyDeleteSome food sayings that pop into my mind are;
-you can't have your cake and eat it too!
-that's the way the cookie crumbles
-an apple a day keeps the doctor away
-flat as a pancake
-you're as sweet as sugar
-butter fingers!
I eat food that makes me happy. Healthy food is not always on the menu. I enjoy lots of chocolate and sugar. Eating these types of treats are never what I should be eating but they way they make me feel is why I keep going back to them. I can defiantly eat a lot of ice cream that is one of my favorites. There are things I can’t do without eating, like watching a movie or doing my homework. Food is essential in my life.

Who cut the cheese?
My sister has always loved to cook and is graduating from culinary school this weekend. Every year we make a wide variety of christmas cookies because she always wanted to be a pastry chef. It's interesting to try the new things she comes up with. I pretend to like them even if they're horrible. Other than baking with her, I enjoying trying new things myself. I absolutely love watching food network. Although it's difficult to make time to cook with school, I try to do it atleast once a week. I try eating as healthy as possible but it's hard to pass up the good stuff(JUNK!) every now and then...

ReplyDeleteThe past ten years of my life has revolved around food. I have worked in many different restaurants, gotten a culinary degree, become a certified chef, read books by food journalists, and watched many hours of Food Network.
ReplyDeleteLocal foods are among my greatest interests. I love to go to new cities or countries to find the diamonds in the rough that only the locals know about. I do all I can to avoid any form of chain or franchised restaurants.
I feel that food is more than a means of obtaining nutrition. Eating is an experience. It brings people together. It is one of the few things that every person in the world has in common.
My favorite food journalist, Anthony Bourdain, explains how food is more than just food in the following quote:
"Meals make the society, hold the fabric together in lots of ways that were charming and interesting and intoxicating to me. The perfect meal, or the best meals, occur in a context that frequently has very little to do with the food itself"
-The proof is in the pudding
-Comparing apples to oranges
To me, food is to be enjoyed. It is used as nourishment but to me, it has to taste good. I would rather not eat anything than eat something that tastes bad. I have found that making food taste good isn't as easy when you are cooking for yourself. My mom is an awesome cook and I got used to eating good. When I got my own apartment and started cooking for myself, it didn't start out too good. Over time, which much practice, I have become (in my opinion) a pretty diverse, talented "chef." I enjoy cooking for myself and for others. I try to eat as healthy as possible. I eat a salad twice a day. I like making grilled chicken stir fry's because they taste good.
ReplyDeleteI used to work at a pizza place. I really liked working there because I got to prepare food for people. I made the pizzas and other items the way I like to eat them, so hopefully other people enjoyed them as well.
Food saying:
You are the apple of my eye
That was a piece of cake
Food...
ReplyDeleteWhere do I begin? Breakfast is probably one of the best meals, offering a diverse range to choose from: cereal and donuts to omelets and bacon. Starting off the day with a nutritional breakfast is essential.
Cooking is enjoyable, working in the kitchen for hours pays off when everyone is sitting around the table with smiles drawn on their faces.
Finally and most importantly, I like to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Recently I have omitted all sources of HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup). Take a look at the ingredients, you'll be surprised at how many products contain this sweetener.
"If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen."
"The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice."
In my opinion food is a social thing. Good food is meant to be shared with good friends. Who wants to eat the most amazing meal by themselves? At my house, we cook meals for all of the roommates at least twice a week. I am not the main chef, in fact I am the worst cook in the house, but I still enjoy being in the kitchen helping out. The feeling of coming together to eat unifies us and brings us closer. Food is the glue that holds my house together.
ReplyDeleteTurns of phrase:
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Bonus turn of phrase:
Mon Petit Chou. (A french term of endearment that translates to: My little Cabbage.)
Gosh, food is one of my favorite pastimes. I love every aspect of it. I would probably spend all day eating if I wouldn't become severely obese. I love good bar-b-que and cheeseburgers. I tend to create my own cheeseburgers whenever I get the chance if its just adding fries or chips to them to give it a different flavor. I also love to eat mustard on my french fries instead of ketchup. Thats one of my little quirks.
ReplyDeleteThe only community thing I would say that I am active in would be making homemade sausage with my uncles. Every winter we slaughter/butcher hogs and have our own homemade seasoning. There is nothing better than fresh sausage!
Food Phrases:
Put some mustard on the ball.
Cool as a cucumber.
Food is not something that I like to reflect on daily, it is not my hobby, I am definitely not passionate about food but it is more than just a necessity. The closest that I get to food on a level greater than just to eat is the Food Network.. I love the Challenges and Ace of Cakes.. I am more of a desert watching person.
ReplyDeleteI hardly ever make anything I eat, unless it’s a quick sandwich or a microwaveable dish. Now I do make a mean Mac n Cheese but then again all I do is heat Easy Mac on the stove and add a few things.
My family is big on going out to eat so when we get together we get to experience all different types of food from different cultures which is pretty cool.
Food Phrase:
"Let them eat Cake!"
The term 'Cake eaters'
For the past few years I have been experimenting in the kitchen and truly found a passion for it. I have always loved to eat and it is defiantly my favorite thing to do. I always found it interesting to try different foods and experiment with varieties of flavors. Once I find the a taste I like I always try to whip something up that appeals even more to my taste buds. I guess it is a great way for me to express the creative side of my personality.
ReplyDelete1. Throw him the stinky cheddar (referring to a fastball in baseball)
2. The big cheese
I have always had a love for food, and although I try to make my food choices with health in mind, taste almost always wins out. One thing that I agree with in a few of these responses is that in all cultures, food is something that brings people together. Perhaps it goes back to the days of hunting and gathering in packs- or perhaps its just the shared enjoyment between people- either way there is no doubt that it creates bonds.
ReplyDeleteMuch like a few other people, I have also had food provide me with income. Working as a cook and a server for almost four years I have had the opportunity to see food in many aspects of its way from raw, to consumption, and all the headaches that come along with it.
"You are what you eat"
"First come first served"
I love to eat food. Meat and potatoes are staples in my life. Breakfast foods are in close second but not in the morning, bacon is good any time of day. I love to make food for myself and others even though im not the best at it. it could end up bad but at least its entertaining to some. Eating healthy is not a concern for me, after all its college and healthier food is more expensive and i walk about 2 miles just going to classes everyday. I also love to work at places that sell good food. 60% off a good sandwich is usually cheaper, easier, and more delicious than making it myself.

Just keying in on what everyone else has said, food in a necessary part of everyone person on the planet’s everyday life. As society and culture have grown food has begun to define who we are as people. Almost anyone can identify food with some demographic that applies to them like socio-economic status, age, nationality, ethnicity, lifestyle or educational background. I remember an example a professor used in a sociology class: an IQ test was being created for children and the question, “what color is a banana” was used. It was determined in that in certain regions the question was unfair because certain children had only ever encountered brown bananas, they had never seen a yellow one. Also, having grown up with two sets of German immigrant grandparents, I never identified with eating ham on Christmas, we always had Roladen, a German beef dish. People can define themselves by what they eat or even what they don’t eat.

ReplyDeleteSince the day I was born I have always had an intense love for food; spaghetti, chocolate, not to mention the cold delicious treat that is ice cream. To this day though, there is hardly a food item that I won’t at least try and even fewer that I completely dislike.
ReplyDeleteFood is not only a necessity but it is an enjoyment. I don’t always eat for the sake of eating but also because I enjoy the taste and the texture. I like to try new things and find rare foods that most people haven’t tasted.
Although this is the case, I am not much of a cook, but I can cook a mean omelet and mac and cheese bowl, which is enough to satisfy me.
I try to eat healthy as I eat turkey, oatmeal, and chicken, but more often than not I am enticed by ravioli, chips, and other bits of random junk food. Needless to say I love food.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree
You are what you eat
Who doesn't love food! Food for me is definitely a passion as well as a necessity. I do not think of myself as being a very picky eater. I am not active in any food community but I am trying to get better at cooking although It can be difficult with classes throughout the day. I am a really huge fan of fruits, and I worked in the produce department of a Kroger Marketplace for a little over a year. It was not the best job but I got a lot of free fruit out of it!
ReplyDeleteFood Phrases:
Cream of the crop
To be honest, food is an epic part of my life. Like all of America I absolutely loved food a bit too much. I use to eat anything and everything, and the results showed. Seeing the results physically, food became a challenge rather than a friend. In two months, I lost around thirty pounds, and for the past five years my relationship with has been VERY particular. I am now a health nut, and instead of taste and flavor I now see food as nutrition facts and serving sizes. Carbs when I am about to engage in physical activity, and then protein to rejuvenate the worn muscles. THESE are things I think about in regards to food, and sometimes I dislike it tremendously. Would I rather have non-fat free ranch? Yes. Does it taste better? Definitely. But I know what it does to the body, and knowing my appetite, I have to watch what I eat.
ReplyDeleteAnd what is that you ask?
I absolutely love cereal. I can eat cereal during any meal of the day. Whether it is the hardcore healthy type (Smart Start, Special K) or the childhood favorites (Lucky Charms, Cookie Crisp), cereal definitely puts a smile on my face. In fact, I lost all that weight by changing my pop intake from regular mountain dew to DIET mountain dew, and having cereal for 2 (even sometimes 3) meals s day. I swear half my family thought I went anorexic! But other than that, lean deli meats and anything with protein (seafood!) is my personal favorites. But like I said, I like ALL kinds of food, and every once in a while I pretend I am NOT a health freak. And that basically is my relationship to food! (I am not a part of any food discourse, but I will obviously get aquatinted to it soon)
Food phrases:
Got a burger to go with that SHAKE?!
Pretty pretty please with a cherry on top!
I love food. I love eating it, buying it, preparing it, reading about it, and watching it on TV. I think it's sad when people are picky eaters, and just generally don't enjoy food. Food is such an interesting part of our lives, and we should appreciate it! Food is an integral part of every culture, and I really enjoy exploring that. I love to try new things: new combinations, new spices, and new ways to serve food.
ReplyDeleteA few things on my list of strange foods eaten thus far:
-octopus
-squid
-alligator
-cow tongue
-rabbit
-shark
-frog legs
-deep fried grasshoppers
-chocolate covered maggots
If someone were to ask me what my favorite food is, I would have to respond to that question with a question: "What type of food are we talkin' here?" Italian? Mexican? Fast-food? Chinese? Seafood? Soul food? Thai? All-american? Breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Dessert? I have a favorite from all of them.
The only issue that I have with food is the effect it has on my body. Weight gain is an issue in college, and there's no doubt that I have to watch my weight. It wasn't always this way, though. Up until my early years of high school I was a short, skinny, muscle packed little girl. I could eat whatever the heck I wanted! But, I have had to monitor my eating since about 10th grade when God decided that I was no longer exempt from the battle with weight that most women face.
Lately, food and I have managed to exist in harmony. I have found a balance between indulging in the foods that I love in moderation, and saying no to unnecessary intakes of fat and calories.
Food Phrases:
- well how do you like them apples?
- eat, drink and be merry!
- when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
- like taking candy from a baby
- bringing home the bacon
It seems as almost everywhere you look there is food. You turn on the TV and there are both commercials promoting food as well as commercials telling us not to eat (diet commercials). We can find channels showing us how to make food, like the food channel, channels telling us where in the world to get the best food, like the travel channel, and channels showing people eating food, like ESPN showing the National Hot Dog Eating Challenge.
ReplyDeleteBut how is food important to us? Why is it that everywhere we look we see food? Food is a necessity to life, whether it is eaten for pleasure or whether it is eaten just to keep us going. After all, if you are human you do need food to survive. But food can mean more than this. Food can describe who we are as a person. By looking at the food that one eats it is possible to determine their religion, their origin, their likes and dislikes, and even their beliefs. I quickly realized that food can be used to describe us. Although, I have never worked in the food business, or even cooked a meal on my own, I still believe that it is easy to see that the foods I eat are an expression of who I am, what my religion is, where I come from, and possibly even my values in life.
And as my sister always calls me, “Shrimp!”
My aunt has always said that there are some people who eat to live, and those who live to eat. Unfortunately my entire family lives to eat. Most, if not all of our family functions revolve around the kitchen table and what's for dinner. There have been times when we have guests over for the holidays and my mother feels the need to make separate dishes of appetizers and desserts for them. This is due to the fact that they have not lived in an atmosphere where you need to be very pro-active in getting your food, if you snooze you will lose in my family. Food has also become a big aspect of my social life. Going to get dinner and talk, and meeting someone over coffee has become a weekly part of my life. I also live in my sorority house, and quite often we all gather around the TV and watch some cooking shows, Paula Deen is our show of choice. Although I would not say that I am any kind of culinary genesis, I also enjoy cooking occasionally. That pretty much sums up my relationship with food.
